According to the Global Digital Nomad Report 2025, Greece ranked 12th worldwide with an overall score of 88.48, with the Digital Nomad Visa being one of the most sought-after residential solutions for non-EU remote workers. One of the main reasons for the latter was, and remains, the possibility of obtaining a Digital Nomad Residence Permit-valid for two years and renewable-through the acquisition of a national Visa type D (in other words, the Digital Nomad Visa, which offers a stay in Greece of up to 12 months as well as potential tax benefits).
The regulatory regime under Law 5038/2023, however, originally stipulated a different alternative. More specifically, besides the Digital Nomad Residence Permit application that followed an entry with a type D Visa, one could bypass this entire procedure by submitting an initial application after entering the country with a short-stay Visa (type C) or under a visa-free status. This legislative provision was particularly helpful, as it offered speed and flexibility.
In February 2026, Law 5038/2023 was amended by Law 5275/2026, which introduced substantial changes to the migration framework. One of these changes was the exclusion of short-term visas from the residence permit acquisition process, maintaining the type D Visa as the single prerequisite in the interest of legal consistency. Therefore, the sole route to obtaining a Digital Nomad Residence Permit within Greece in 2026 is through the issuance of a type D Visa. The main eligibility criteria under Law 5275/2026 remain a monthly income of at least 3,500 euros, which increases by 20% for a spouse and 15% for each child, as well as proof of remote work capacity for a company active outside Greece.
A thoughtful tip one can keep in mind: while a contract employee only needs proof of a single employment contract to be considered as a digital nomad, a freelancer needs proof of at least two existing contracts with different customers.
